Should you invest in blue light glasses?

12 August 2022

Blue light is all around us. With everyone using technology daily, our exposure to blue light has exponentially increased due to these devices relying on LED technology.

Are you worried about the effect that digital screen exposure is having on your eyes?

To help with the increased exposure to blue light, blue light blocking glasses have gained significant popularity due to the claims that they can protect against eye strain. But do they actually help and protect your eyes against blue light, keeping them healthy?

What is blue light?

Blue light is just one colour type on the spectrum of light emitted; it is defined as ‘visible light’. Light contains a range of different colours, including red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, violet and blue.

Within each colour on the light spectrum, there are different levels that are emitted. The levels of blue lights are produced from a variety of light sources, including the sun as well as human-made sources (e.g. digital screens such as computers, tablets, smartphones, etc).

What are blue light glasses? And, what do blue light glasses do?

Blue light glasses, also known as blue light blocking glasses, have been specially designed with lenses that help reduce the amount of blue light reaching an individual’s eye when wearing them.

The lenses that have been designed filter blue light rays, reducing potential damage to the eye. In order to counter the blue light exposure, blue light blocking glasses contain a slight yellow tint.

What are blue light blocking glasses good for?

With the significant amount of time that people spend using digital screens and devices; around 43% of adults work in a role that requires prolonged use of a laptop or computer. In conjunction with this, is the close proximity that people are spending in front of the device (namely their eyes), which has become something that causes concern. It has not yet been determined what the potential long-term effects of blue light are on eye health.

By wearing blue light glasses, it can help reduce eye strain. The glasses can also make it easier for you to focus on a digital screen as they help increase contrast on the screen.

Do blue light glasses work?

In answer to the much debated question, do blue light glasses really work? It is, at the time of writing this, so far inconclusive.

There is no substantial scientific evidence that blue light blocking glasses are effective at reducing the amount of blue light entering the eyes when worn. This has been backed up by The College of Optometrists, who stated ‘there is no current research to suggest that it does improve, or protect the health of your eyes’.
